Projektbeschreibung / Projectdiscription

In the town of Lohsa next to the pond “Knappensee” has an adventure themed playground been built in order to balance the redevelopment measure in the mining area of the Lausitz. That playground has a size at about 400m². Its structure fits well into the environment due to the chosen materials. Without any exception, durable and low-maintenance requiring material like shotcrete, natural stone and stainless steel has been used. As a result, an individual, durable and artfully playground has been created which maintenance costs are minimized. The children have several options to explore and try out the various attractions or to invent their own games.
The chosen theme “mining” is supposed to relate the play equipment to the region. Furthermore the planners placed value on linking the play equipment with the history of the region as a bilingual area and home of the Sorbs. Part of the regional commitment is the legend of “Krabat”. Therefor some elements of the legend were clarified in stone and became part of the playground.

The playground is arranged in 2 sections – one section for toddlers and young children and another section for children at the age from 12 – 14 years. The sections are not divided but blend into one another. The overall concept integrates various interests of children of different ages and offers most diverse activities.

Experiences as sense perception, developing the kid’s individual motor skills and balance have priority in the section for the young children. Core elements of the design are supposed to encourage the children’s fantasy – experience, sense and explore. Glacial erratics are most involved in the structure, relating to the region Lausitz as a mining area.  The centre is a play hill which is about 1,50m high and made of glacial erratics. At this point the following elements can be explored: net tunnel, stainless steel slide, climbing ramp, sand play area and a water channel connected to the “Knappensee-Wasserspiel“water play. Moreover the play equipment is completed with nature and adventure themed play modules. These are: gold digger sieve, seesaw, nest swing, horizontal bar as well as different types of balancing equipment. Several seating accommodations and benches with a glacial erratic look are offered additionally to the guests. The elements of the legend “Krabat” are involved again as well.
The balancing equipment leads to the section for the older children. The first attraction here is a climbing wall made of coloured shotcrete with a height of 3,60m. Mainly, the children do improve their motor skills on the wall. The next play equipment is based on rotary excavator. Several types of play and climbing equipment are integrated, such as: net bridge, jungle bridge, octagon tower, climbing rope, climbing wall, wobbly catwalk, net tunnel, tunnel slide and climbing pole.
